Overview of Visual Arts at Pinnacle High School:
The Pinnacle High School visual arts program is one of the finest in the state. This department offers drawing, painting, photography, ceramics I, ceramics II, studio art and culture and advanced art courses. The sequence of these courses begins with the building of foundational skills in both two dimensional and three dimensional media. The next set of courses teaches in-depth techniques and allows students to master the vocabulary and methods introduced in the first year. In our most advanced courses, students engage with historic and contemporary art and create original, professional-quality work. In this manner, by the end of four years of instruction, our students have knowledge and skill in the visual arts that rivals many college-level art students.
High school art students also benefit from the enriching experiences of field trips and presentations from college recruiters. Each year, we take students to local art museums, art exhibitions, college campuses and other visual arts destinations. These field trips inspire creativity and motivation in our classes. Additionally, college representatives present to the high school visual arts students about lucrative and high-demand careers in the arts and the degree programs that will take students to those outcomes. These presentations lend relevance to our coursework and help our students make viable plans for the future.
Artwork produced by Pinnacle High School students has been awarded by the Scholastic Art Exhibition, the Colorado Department of Education office of cultural and linguistic diversity, and the CSI magazine cover contest. Many of our students have gone on to have successful careers in the arts. Beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, some of our courses will prepare our students for careers such as Technical Illustrator, Arts Administrator, Freelance Photographer, Graphic Designer, Multi-media specialist, Museum Educator, Product Designer, Architect, Art Restoration Specialist, Web Designer, Gallery Curator, Art Therapist, Fine Arts Appraiser, Animator, Fashion and Visual Merchandising, and Interior Design.

Here's the latest news from the High School Art Department:
We are thrilled to share an exciting experience that our high school art students participated in to make a positive impact in our community and beyond. We have recently engaged in an inspiring initiative called the Memory Project to study portraiture. The Memory Project (memoryproject.org) is a non-profit organization that connects art students with children around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as violence, war, extreme poverty, neglect, and loss of parents. The goal is to provide these children with meaningful keepsake portraits that help them feel valued and important. Through the transformative power of art, we can contribute to creating a lasting, positive memory for these children.
Attached you will see a slideshow of the portraits and a group picture of the students who created them. Happy viewing.
Here's the latest news from the High School Art Department:
We are pleased to announce that we have eleven high school students who have won awards in the 2022-2023 Scholastic Art Contest for the Colorado region. Scholastic Art and Writing Highlights
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards date back to 1923.
-
Over the years, the Awards have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers.
-
Each year, the Alliance partners with more than 100 visual and literary arts organizations across the country to bring The Awards to local communities.
-
Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published.
-
Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
-
In the last five years alone, students submitted nearly 900,000 original works of art and writing. During that period, more than 60 top arts institutes have partnered with the Awards to make $40 million in scholarships and financial aid available to regional and national Scholastic Award winners.
Our part in the process…
This year we entered around fifty pieces into the contest and received awards for eleven of them. Our students were honored with seven gold key awards, two silver key awards, and two honorable mentions in various media such as photography, digital art, and painting.
